Oyster Bay Market Reports

Replete with a long and interesting past, the Town of Oyster Bay is known for many significant historical and geographical elements. One of which is that while made up of 18 villages and 18 hamlets, it is the only township in Nassau County that stretches from the shores of The Long Island South (North) to the inlet of South Oyster Bay and the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean (South). Post World Wars I and II, the Town’s economy began changing to one of industry and business. Sprawling farmlands gave way to business complexes, factories and new housing. Today, Oyster Bay enjoys a well-balanced blend of commercial, residential and recreational development.

     Centre Island

Located within the Town of Oyster Bay on a tiny peninsula of just 605 acres, the Village of Centre Island has over four miles of coastline bordered by Cold Spring Harbor, Oyster Bay Harbor, and Long Island Sound. Its most notable residents are music legend Billy Joel, political commentator Sean Hannity and media mogul Rupert Murdoch. This northernmost landmass is another of the North Shore’s Gold Coast exclusive habitués because of its seclusion and desirable waterfront living. Access to Centre Island is available via one road through the harborside community of Bayville. Varying architectural styles include everything from Mediterranean to Contemporary make up the majority of waterfront homes, most only visible from the water. Residents who commute to Manhattan would utilize the Oyster Bay line which is approximately a 90 minute trip. School aged children attend the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District.

     Cove Neck

The incorporated Village of Cove Neck sits on its own peninsula occupying about 1.6 square miles jutting out into South Oyster Bay, the Long Island Sound and directly across from Centre Island. The secluded natural boundaries of deep dense tree lines and large acreage estates make residing in Cove Neck a private oasis. One may never meet a neighbor unless absolutely necessary. Its most high profile residents include Cablevision Pioneers Charles and James Dolan, artist Mort Kunstler and Computer Associates, Islanders Owner Charles Wang. One claim to fame is the fabled, now almost completely restored Sagamore Hill, final residence of US President Theodore Roosevelt. The museum pays homage to this ‘Rough Rider’, stalwart soldier, and iconic political figure.

Cove Neck, in the Town of Oyster Bay, is accessed by a single road making it a favorite destination and not a drive through community reducing unnecessary traffic noise for residents. Appealing to many is the scenic drive into Oyster Bay along Cove Road. For commuters into New York City, Westchester or the Bronx, the trip by car is approximately 60 minutes. Residents of Cove Neck can shop at Oyster Bay’s Main Street businesses which serve as the hub for dining, entertainment and an array of smart boutiques and shops as a local alternative to Americana Manhasset or Wheatley Plaza.      Oyster Bay

Though a detailed and winding narrative is published of how the Hamlet of Oyster Bay came to be, in the end it was the last parcel of land ownership which was finally settled between Dutch, English and native Matinecock Indians in 1687. Today, The Hamlet occupies approximately 1.6 square miles surrounded by Oyster Bay Cove, East Norwich, Matinecock and Mill Neck. There are extensive waterfront activities including sailing, education and summer programs overseen by TheWaterfrontCenter.org.

The Downtown of Oyster Bay has been witness to its own revitalization with an assortment of boutiques and shops where shoppers can find everything from art studios and restaurant to medical and business services catering to all of the needs of its residents. Recreation and culture are two mainstays of the Hamlet with many notable points of interest including President Theodore Roosevelt’s summer White House and residence, Raynham Hall, Planting Fields Arboretum, and the Oyster Bay Rail Road Museum.

     Oyster Bay Cove

The Village of Oyster Bay Cove is located east of Oyster Bay and is further surrounded by the towns of Cove Neck, Laurel Hollow and East Norwich. Occupying just about 4.3 square miles, the village is home to rolling hills, tree lined streets, large, secluded estates and waterfront properties in and around Weeks Point and Oyster Bay.

Over the years, the Village has maintained a predominantly residential community appeal with the benefits of suburban living. Situated between Oyster Bay’s Downtown District, the waterfront and the more robust Huntington Commercial District, the ability to commute or visit Manhattan – about 30 miles away -- appeals to residents. Of equal charm is the proximity to Golf and Tennis Clubs, equestrian trails and luxury shopping districts such as American Manhasset and Wheatley Plaza. However, a mainstay remains the boating and sailing culture evident in and around this coastal Village.

     East Norwich

The Hamlet of East Norwich is landlocked between its more well-known sister towns of Oyster Bay and Oyster Bay Cove though equally attractive in geography and community atmosphere. Occupying a mere 1.0 square miles, East Norwich is prime residential living. Though more densely populated than many of its Gold Coast North Shore neighbors, the Hamlet of East Norwich maintains a rich urban sophistication more closely akin to the gentrified areas of Brooklyn. Home to the historic 550-acre Muttontown Preserve, the largest natural area in Nassau County, this oasis offers a back-to-nature experience for individuals and families alike. With a Nature Center and Chelsea Mansion, the Preserve is a well-known visitor’s attraction throughout Long Island.

Major roadways including Northern Blvd (Route 25A) Routes 106/107 and Berry Hill Road offer swift access into Oyster Bay to the North, Syosset/Jericho to the South, Manhasset to the west and the 5 harbors region to the east, making travel along the Gold Coast and through the North Shore quite pleasing. The drive into Manhattan is approximately 30 miles or 90 minutes by Oyster Bay Line of the Long Island Rail Road. Shopping and dining are within a short drive and conveniently located at the crossroads of Northern Blvd and Route 106 as well as further north into the Oyster Bay Business district. Links to Village Hall, Post Office, Museums, Parks, Golf, Tennis, Dining, Schools, Shopping

     Laurel Hollow

The Village of Laurel Hollow, incorporated in 1926, was originally called Laurelton but the name was changed so as not to confuse it with Laurelton in Queens County. Known for its ties to the Whaling trade, today Laurel Hollow remains a picturesque town with nautical influences. Perched at the mouth of Cold Spring Harbor, the Village is reminiscent more of a New England community with the downtown lined with quaint shops and commerce in a very Dickens-like setting. Most homes are on smaller parcels and while styles vary greatly, one can find an assortment of well-manicured properties surrounding Cape Cods, cottages, ranches and colonials.

The hilly and densely forested landscape is populated with an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty evident as one travels along Route 25A, the main road that dissects the village. Changing names many times in its 73 miles of meandering roadways, Route 25A becomes Northern Boulevard, North Hempstead Turnpike, Main Street, Fort Salonga Road and North Country Road, and again Route 25A as the northern most thoroughfare passing through towns like Brookville, Roslyn, Centerport and Fort Salonga along the famed Gold Coast and North Shore of Long Island. Notable attractions include Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium, the Uplands Farm Sanctuary and 14-acre St. John’s Pond Preserve welcoming the nature lovers and birders. For the boaters, there is the private Whaler’s Cove Yacht Club serving the boating community.

Laurel Hollow is approximately 37 miles from Manhattan. The commute from the Cold Spring Harbor Rail Stop would be approximately 97 minutes depending on the peak travel schedule. Links to Village Hall, Post Office, Museums, Parks, Golf, Tennis, Dining, Schools, Shopping
